Although I did not attend the procession on Ferragosto, I enjoyed watching it take off and return, and I took a few photos.

The faithful all gathered at the church on San Nicola at 6pm, and made ther way down to the port; other groups joined them from San Domino by boat at 6.30. The sea was a bit rough so they had to choose where to celebrate the mass so as to encounter the calmest waters possible, and they chose Cala Matano (a well-known bay). Here they are all setting off together by boat.

The mass takes about an hour, and in fact around 7-something pm they made their way back to San Domino.

After which, while chanting the rosary, the procession walks all the way up to the main square where there is a little church. They carry the banner of the city herald, and a car parades a statue of the Madonna, with garlands of flowers.

It's frequented by people of all ages who will brave any weather condition to attend this traditional demonstration of devotion.
